Purification at the Nano Scale

Water

A Japanese drinking water-filtration strategy could assist quench the world's developing thirst.

Recent occasions in Japan have sparked problems about freshwater availability in a large amount of components of the nation. Luckily for Japan, the nation is also the world's leader in water filtration.

Japanese maker Nitto Denko is currently advertising and marketing what it claims is the world's most successful desalination filter, the SWC6 MAX, a reverse-osmosis nanomembrane strategy released in 2010. In accordance to the service, the filter can do away with "salt and other minerals as properly as bacteria and viruses from seawater, and reduced the 3.5% of salt in seawater to .0075%"-lower than the salt written content of freshwater. The SWC6 MAX was invented by Hisao Hachisuka and is presently in use in a water remedy facility in Australia.

At present, SWC6 MAX water is rather steeply-priced. The price of filtering an acre foot is alot more than $650, considering of the amount of power needed to drive drinking water by means of the filter. That price tag tag is outside of the suggests for the world's poorest inhabitants but within achieve for the Japanese. The company has not says that it will be by using the technological know-how in the regions impacted by the March 2011 tsunami or radiation. On the other hand, multiple other technologies exist for effectual wastewater filtration, which could be chosen in Japan, together with ozone injection and nanofiltration.

One particular of the a lot more unique water purification technologies to emerge just lately is electro-filtration thru silver nanowire fiber. The silver nanowire mesh, linked to a 20-volt electric power supply, zaps bacteria and pathogens, generating the h2o drinkable. This way, pioneered by Stanford University professor Yi Cui, has been demonstrated to be significantly more powerful and less power- intensive than other filtration approaches that necessitate giant quantities of vitality to drive drinking water by using filters.

At present, silver nanowire filtration is also fee-prohibitive for the world's poorest areas, due to the higher price tag of constructing silver nanowires. But in 2010, Taiwanese chemist Yi-Hsiuan Yu patented a strategy for mass creation of silver nanowires. If this process is effective, it could drastically scale back the fee of creation for these nanowires, making Yi Cui's filter more useful for the world's bad. Korean firm Toptec has patented the world's to start with nanofiber mass manufacturing system.

The World-wide Drinking water Recycling and Reuse Product Association of Japan has a great, federal government-funded mandate to "grow [a] comprehensive h2o recycle model and expand the procedure, producing the most use of Japanese technologies and knowhow." The Japanese govt sees water filtration and green infrastructure as a critical export location for the future.

The United Nations estimates that two.8 billion persons will stay in a drinking water-stressed setting by 2025. The world's poorest visitors require entry to cutting-edge desalination technologies, coupled with innovative filtration, to enhance the availability of freshwater and to do away with toxins from wastewater. Wastewater recycling on the neighborhood stage is very important for h2o stability, a variety of authorities contend. According to the Japanese federal government, there will be a $one trillion markets for risk-free drinking water reclamation and recycling by 2025, so the likely personal client list is considerable.

Setting up A Discus Fish Tank: Helpful Tips to Raise Your Discus Fish

As an aquarist, you probably know that discus fish are one of the most sought after species of fish today.

They are colorful and they are also fun to watch inside the aquarium. However, the problem with discus fish is that they are very hard to maintain.

You need to have the proper aquarium setup in order for you to successfully raise them and even breed them.

You have to remember they are very sensitive animals that need to be watched constantly. Basically, they will need extremely clear water and you also have to maintain the temperature as well as the pH level of the water at a constant level.

Also, you need to monitor the quantity of heavy metals, nitrites, nitrates, and ammonia in the water. It is highly recommended that as a fish owner, you need to use a reverse osmosis filtration unit inside the fish tank where you keep the discus fish.

This is quite advantageous and will make it easier for you to maintain the quality of water but they are not really considered as a necessity. You have to remember that reverse osmosis filtration unit cost a lot of money.

And, if you are just starting out raising them, you will see that the price of this kind of filter is enough reason not to put one in your tank.

When you are setting up your fish tank, it is important to remember that you have to add a water conditioner in the tap water, which you will doubtlessly use.

This will do the job in taking out the chlorine as well as other chemicals present in the water. Keep in mind that they thrive in softer water. If your tap water is filled with chemicals, then the fish will not survive that long.

You also have to remember that discus fish likes to live in large areas of water. So, you may want to buy a larger fish tank in order for you to make sure that they will be comfortable and not get subjected to a lot of stress.

Also, you may want to keep in mind that the water in larger fish tanks are a lot easier to maintain than water in small fish tanks.

The placement of the aquarium or fish tank where you plan on putting in the discus fish will also matter. Make sure that you don't place them in an area where it gets a lot of direct sunlight.

Doing so will cause too much plant expansion, which will scale back the oxygen concentration inside the fish tank. You should also avoid placing the tank in areas in your home that gets too much traffic.

This will simply subject your fish with high levels of stress, which will eventually mean that they will be more prone to sickness.

Lastly, make sure that the fish tank resembles the natural environment where they lived before. So, avoid putting plastic mermaids and castle decorations.

Instead, try to put rocks and a couple of driftwood as this will mimic their natural environment where they will be more at ease.

Well Water Filtration Systems -- What You Need To Know About Them

Having your own independent source of water is an advantage that many people enjoy these days. If you are one of them, you may be aware of the risks that arise from the use of well water if it's not treated correctly. While municipal tap water, in most regions, covers all the requirements for safety and taste that local and world water organizations standardize, it's a different situation when it comes to well water. With the proper use of well water filtration systems you can aim to bring your water to a higher level of quality. Another benefit is that you have the freedom to customize what affects its taste and smell.

If someone tells you that you can consume your well water without chlorine treatment for an extended period of time, don't believe them. There is not such thing as decent, safe well water filtration not utilizing chlorine. Some of the best systems go to such extent as to use tri-chlorine for optimal treatment. The good news is that chlorine is removed before the water reaches your faucets, with the use of additional layers of filtration.

A very contradictory opinion exists about reverse osmosis water filters. The arguments come from the fact that this method removes all minerals from water. It has been recently discovered that some of those minerals are essential for our well being. The defenders of the method claim that public water supplies contain only bad minerals that can lead to health problems. Yet world water organizations say that there are many benefits for our organism which minerals provide, sustaining the balance of vital functions in our bodies.

Before you get confused, it is important to note that the first and fore-most thing you can do to clear up the picture is to have your well water thoroughly analyzed by a trusted local authority or laboratory. By interpreting the data and consulting specialists you will become aware of what contaminants and level of pollution your well and the water inside it have, in order to take measures.

While reverse osmosis can be used at some exit points in your house, it is not a suggested system to use for the water purification on its path from your well to the house. A great many modern methods exist that effectively remove chlorine and organic substances from water while restructuring the water on atom level to give it much higher hydration and antioxidant effects. It's good to note that these effects are short-lasting as the body is able to recover its natural pH balance, but there are still some benefits from a long-term usage.

By employing ion-resins and magnetic surfaces, and with the combination of secondary filtering units acting as pre- and post-filters, a complete purification can be achieved. At the same time the waste of water, slow speed and demineralization that accompany reverse osmosis or distillation methods are avoided.

If there is a risk for contamination to your water well or you're not so sure about the purity of water in it, you simply can't afford to save on expenses. After all you want to guarantee the long-term health of yourself and your family, right? Utilizing the correct well water filtration system is just a matter of careful research and consideration. Once made, this decision would improve the quality of your life and let you enjoy cool fresh water for years to come.

Why Is Your Freshwater Aquarium Cloudy?

Okay, so you set up a new aquarium, did the necessary research about all the materials you will need, even purchased the most ideal size because you want your tank to be the center of attraction. Above all, you want to enjoy watching the fish swim by inside because it gives you a different kind of high and tranquility. But to your dismay, after going through all this trouble, you are now having trouble seeing your fish inside of the aquarium because your tanks water has become cloudy and even murky. Did you do something wrong that made your freshwater aquarium cloudy?

Cloudy water is an occurrence that leads many fish enthusiasts to ask experts for advice to which a single answer cannot be given as there are several causes. the waters color and conditions in the tank determine the possible cause.

What causes white or grayish water?

Gravel Residue

When you fill your freshwater aquarium with water the first time and after a couple of hours your tanks water turns cloudy, the gravel that you put in your fish tank may not have been washed thoroughly. Empty the tank and give the gravel some more rinsing until the water runs clear into the drain. It is not surprising for new rocks and decorations to cause cloudy water even if they were rinsed prior to placing them in the tank. When they get soaked in the tank, tight dirt that was not washed away by rinsing, loosens up. You can get all of the dirt loose by soaking the gravel for 2 to 3 days in a separate container, and then give them another rinsing before you place them in the tank

Dissolved Elements

What happens if washing the gravel doesn't solve the problem? As mentioned above, there are several answers as there are several causes. So if thorough gravel cleaning does not solve the problem, the second most likely cause is dissolved elements such as heavy metals, silicates or phosphates. Test the water to determine the pH level and if it is found to be high, water conditioners can generally solve the problem.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) may be chosen because not only does it help in resolving cloudy water issues, but if the water contains toxic elements. Using an reverse osmosis unit purifies and softens the water.

Bacteria Bloom

There are instances when after the aquarium is set up, water remains clear for days, sometimes for several weeks. everything is going great, then out of nowhere the tank water becomes cloudy. When this happens, the gravel is not the cause anymore but bacterial bloom. While doing your research prior to your purchase of the tank and the rest of the equipment, you surely have read something about 'cycling' the tank. The initial cycle that the aquarium goes through typically results to cloudy water. This is because after several days or weeks or even months, bacterial colonies begin to start that will clear waste from the water. Once the cycle takes place, the cloudiness clears itself.

New fish tank keepers sometimes tend to panic upon seeing the water in the tank turn cloudy. Our advice is whatever the cause, never panic. Instead find what's causing it because that can always be resolved. Keeping the aquarium free from debris such as decaying plants and excess food, regular gravel vacuuming and doing partial water changes are all steps to maintain cleanliness of the tank and will resolve most bacterial bloom cases. Flocculates, sold at fish shops, are also used as water clearer as they make debris bunch together which then are cleared by filters. So be sure to regularly clean your filters too which will help maintain their efficiency.

What causes green water?

Needless of an explanation, green water is caused by algae growth. The difficult part comes in its removal especially if you do not know what's causing the growth.

Excess light is the most probable cause and the cure is easy. When a freshwater aquarium is placed in a spot where it gets direct sunlight like in front of a window or when tank lights are on for too long, or the tank lights are far too strong, it promotes algae growth. Simply move the tank out of direct sunlight or lessen the time the lights are on and that will do it. If it is not possible to move the tank, try a UV sterilizer to control the algae.

Too much nutrients such as phosphates and nitrates also makes a good reason for algae growth. a water change will provide the owner with a quick fix but the problem will come back. But the source of the excess nutrients has to be removed or the problem will persist.

The presence of high phosphates can come from a couple of sources which are the old water in your tank, and decaying substances. Also, you may need to reduce the amount of food you give to your fish.

Fish wastes' byproduct makes nitrates naturally rise in the aquarium after some time and that is why a water change is a required maintenance as part of upkeep of an aquarium. So do not over crowd your tank with too many fish, or you will regularly face a problem with high levels of nitrates.

In general, a partial water change removes about 10-15 % of the water and can clean the gravel and help remove any excess uneaten food in the tank. Your fish are a good telltale sign of a real problem so check them if you're not certain of the tank water being bad. If they are alright, you just might need to give it some time, because if it's bacteria that is causing the problem, it will resolve itself. This may not be applicable in all cases. There are times when you will really need to make sure that the problem is under control.

It is advisable to keep a smaller 'quarantine tank' in such cases so that you can transfer your fish to the other tank and deal with the problem in a more direct fashion. If you need to relocate your fish to a quarantine tank, then be sure beforehand that the quarantine tanks temperature and water PH are the same as the main tank or your fish may get very sick quickly and die.

Water: The Overlooked Nutrient

When people talk about nutrition, they usually overlook one of the most important nutrients necessary for good health. WATER! That's mostly because we've taken it for granted for thousands of years.

Water alone cures many so-called diseases. It even eases aches and pains. Dehydration is a major problem, and its estimated that 4/5ths of the human population is dehydrated. To further multiply this problem, as we get older, we tend to lose the thirsty feelings that urge us to drink.

Its usually recommended that we each drink 64 ounces of water per day - thats 8 each 8 ounce glasses (full) every day. Actually, the better recommendation for good health is 1 gallon per 50 pounds of body weight. Few of us ever get even those minimum 8 glasses per day. The majority of adults in the US are borderline dehydrated. This is a mostly unsuspected cause, or a contributor to almost all disease or illnesses. You cannot drink too much water, so for better health start forcing yourself to drink more! Youll enjoy better health as a result.

We cannot absorb water properly in anything that contains caffeine or sugar, so soda, coffee and tea dont count in your daily intake. Some experts say that we should take enough water in so that our urine looks almost clear. (Since I take a multivitamin with excess B vitamins, my urine is always slightly yellow colored.

Did you know that many deaths in nursing homes are actually caused by dehydration? Dehydration of the frontal lobes is a major factor in senility and is often misdiagnosed as Alzheimers.

People are becoming aware that their drinking water (out of the tap) isn't very good any more. The market for bottled water is huge and becoming more and more profitable every year as a result. But, is all bottled water safe? Here are a few of the problems:

The plastic it is usually packaged in varies. The cloudy type isnt nearly as stable a plastic as the clear type. And, all plastic gives up a few molecules to water (the universal solvent of the philosophers). This is not good for any of us. Hard plastic or glass is best.

City and municipal water requirements are usually much more stringent than are bottling rules. In a study of 103 brands of bottled water the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) found that 1/3rd of the over 1000 bottles tested contained bacteria, as well as synthetic organic chemicals, and one sample even contained arsenic above state health limits.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates the tap water standards, and promotes a Minimum Federal Standard for cities and states. They have no jurisdiction over bottled water, so there are no real standard to protect us. (Can you trust any water bottler, or all of the employees of same?)

Lets look at some labels and see what they really mean.

1. Bottled Spring water: All too often this is just a scam. Yes, it's from a "spring", but there is no guarantee that the water from this spring is pure. Often, it's bottled from a local water supply directly from a tap. It's from a spring OK, but what spring? There's big money in bottled water, and if you haven't noticed, it's sometimes even more expensive than soft drinks.

2: Drinking Water. This is at least half honest. It's straight out of a faucet, so we can hope that it's at least relatively free of toxicity, and maybe meets the minimum Federal standard for drinking water. Did you know that many, if not most, city and town water supplies in the USA do NOT meet "Minimum"? (Of course, those "standards" only apply to sissies.) Good luck.

3. Catching Rainwater. This time-honored way to get "pure water" just doesn't work very well anymore. The amount of toxic material in the air results in "Acid Rain" in much of the US. When my wife and I sailed around the Caribbean some years ago, we caught all our water that way, and simply filtered it thru a carbon block filter after putting in some chlorine to kill the possible airborne bacteria. It worked because the ocean rain is much purer than most of the rain over land.

4. Carbon Filtered Water. These are those little "screw-on" or "pitcher" water filters. Some even have a silver nitrate element to kill bacteria included. Few are good enough to remove most of the worst contaminants. And, few people change the filters often enough, so contamination creeps in again. They give you a false sense of security, and because of the carbon filtering, the water smells and tastes better, but in most areas, it simply isn't very good. (Perfume can cover up a contamination smell, but it doesn't remove the source.)

5. Distilled Water. This is excellent for your steam iron or making Colloidal Silver, but unless it's distilled in glass, it may have high amounts of Copper or Nickel from the distilling piping used. It also usually has no taste - pretty flat. But, it's still better than what probably comes out of your faucet.

6. Reverse Osmosis Water. This is probably the "best" of all drinking water, PROVIDED that the filters are changed regularly. Ideally, there are several "particle" filters and at least one carbon block filter prior to the Reverse Osmosis filter. This RO filter is a rubbery sheet, and by osmotic action, (and water pressure) molecules of water pass from the "dirty" side to the "clean side. This type of filter can also get clean drinking water from the ocean. It is by far the best drinking water. (For a great taste, you can add about teaspoon of sea salt per gallon, and/or even a few drops of lemon juice.)

Those are your choices for cleaner and safer water. As you can see, I recommend only the RO water because it's cheaper and safer than filling gallon jugs out of a RO machine in a supermarket!

I found a simple under-counter Reverse Osmosis unit at Costco or Home Depot for under $150. It wasnt too difficult to install, and it works well for a year without changing filters in a two person household. (Otherwise, change filters every six months.)

Your health is up to you. I hope this helps you to make good choices.

Reverse Osmosis Water System Units-Is Reverse Osmosis the Best Choice?

Is reverse osmosis the best choice for a water filter system? What other water purifier systems are there that may be as good or better than reverse osmosis? This article will answer those questions so you can make the best choice for you and your family.

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis water system units can be expensive, wasteful and usually unnecessary in most applications, especially in the home. There are less expensive and more efficient water filtering systems. Keep reading and I will tell you what is.

Reverse osmosis (RO) water units were all the rage at one time, but their popularity has diminished for a number of reasons. Manufacturers are still trying to keep reverse osmosis systemes in the public eye by creating smaller, easier to operate units, but they are still expensive, wasteful and mostly unnecessary. Here's why.

Price

Price is not a factor when we talk about protecting our familys health. If reverse osmosis water units were the only way to do that, it wouldnt matter how much they cost. But, there are less expensive more efficient devices available, today.

How RO Works

Reverse osmosis systems work by forcing contaminated water through a semi-permeable membrane. If the pores of the membrane are small enough (below 1 micron), things like dirt, lead, cysts, minerals and anything larger than a micron in size will be removed.

Don't Let RO Companies Fool You

That sounds pretty good, until you realize that the traces of chemicals that exist in our water today are smaller than a micron. So, they will pass right through the membrane. They can only be trapped by granulated carbon and blocks made of carbon and other filtering media.

Some of the newer reverse osmosis water units include a carbon filtration step. That was a good decision, but why then do you need the reverse osmosis step? If you have the right purifier, you dont.

A Better Choice is Available

There are new purifiers that include sub-micron filtration, which is similar to reverse osmosis systemes, but far less expensive. They also, of course, include carbon filters and blocks, so all chemicals are removed, but what about lead.

Toxic Lead Removal is Vital

Lead is a toxic heavy metal that is often found in tap water, because the material was used to make the distribution pipes that run from the treatment facility to your home. It causes health problems for the young and old alike.

Reverse osmosis water units remove lead particles larger than a micron. Ions of lead that are smaller can only be removed through an ion exchange system.

With ion exchange tiny particles of lead and copper are removed from the supply by exchanging them for potassium and sodium particles or ions. Potassium and sodium are the two most important electrolytes for maintaining good hydration.

Minerals Are Necessary for Good Health

Reverse osmosis systemes remove minerals and electrolytes, so the water tastes stale and is not good for your health. With sub-micron filtration and ion exchange, you can remove any particles of lead that may be present in your water, but not all of the trace minerals that taste good and help the body maintain its electrolyte balance. If you are using Reverse Osmosis or even after reading this, continue to use RO, please take a multi-mineral or multi-nutrient tablet.

Biggest Advantage

The biggest disadvantage of reverse osmosis systems, to many of us, is the wastewater created. Each and every design they have come up with wastes gallons of water. It goes down the drain and back into the environment.

Best Choice for Your Health

Other purifiers trap the contaminants in an enclosed cartridge, but every ounce of water that comes into your house is cleaned. None is wasted. Find out if you truly need reverse osmosis water units, before you buy them. I found a much better option that outperforms reverse osmosis by a country mile.

For more detailed information on the best water filter system, please see my website listed below. (Don't be surprised if RO companies comment negatively or disagree with this. The facts speak and you just read them. It shows that they have a problem to defend.) The best choice is not a reverse osmosis unit. Please see my website listed below for a better choice than reverse osmosis.

In addition to the core reverse osmosis plant, the scope of supply consists of the seawater intake, dissolved air flotation, ultrafiltration, and post treatment packages. A sophisticated DCS System for performance enhancement and data monitoring will also be supplied, ensuring that FEWA is equipped with the best technologies and a world-class facility.

There was significant competition for the high-profile project with more than 10 bidders submitting proposals. Although not the lowest bidder on a capital cost basis, Aquatech was awarded the project due to the most competitive overall lifecycle cost.

"Aquatech has a track record in leveraging our deep technology portfolio to offer competitive solutions to the markets we serve. Whether it's making zero liquid discharge more affordable, or increasing the economic viability of oil and gas extraction through cost-effective produced water treatment, we are very focused on finding innovative ways to deliver the optimal lifecycle cost to our clients. The FEWA award is further validation of these efforts for the very important desalination marketplace," said Devesh Sharma, Chief Commercial Officer of Aquatech.

The project, valued at over $82 Million US Dollars, is scheduled to be operational in late 2013.

With this win, Aquatech bolsters its list of major projects in desalination and water reuse in the Middle East. Ahead Considering With Reverse Osmosis

Reverse Osmosis is a model of filtration that is extremely effective at removing even the smallest particles from a liquid. It is also identified as Hyperfiltration. The Reverse Osmosis method can eradicate particles as tiny as a dissolved person ion. The most in style use for this operation is in the purification of water for human usage.

Reverse Osmosis works by using a semi-permeable membrane that will allow the drinking water to pass by way of it, though guaranteeing that contaminants do not. Reverse Osmosis systems have arrive a prolonged way in recent a long time, and a wide selection of many people have set up them in their households to ensure that their relatives is consuming clean, pure, balanced drinking water.

Most households are rightly anxious about the top quality of h2o they are consuming. As evidenced by quite a few stories in the press, everyone won't be able to continuously be confident that their tap drinking water is clear and cost-free from contaminants. A person of the recommended techniques to ensure that your spouse and children has thoroughly clean consuming water is to just take matters into your own fingers and make investments in a Reverse Osmosis method. There is no other industrial model readily available that is as effectual as Reverse Osmosis.

Whereas a Reverse Osmosis technique does appropriately thoroughly clean water, it does not disinfect it. The membrane that is implemented for filtration can and will do away with biological contaminants, but it might not be relied on exclusively to deal with contaminated h2o for human consumption. If you are involved about biological contaminants, you could always add an ultraviolet light to your water product. Powerful ultraviolet light programs will ruin biological contaminants prior to they get to your RO procedure, due to this fact making sure only the finest practical drinking h2o.

Reverse Osmosis systems proficiently take away dozens of contaminants from h2o, among them chlorine, benzene, chloroform, barium, and countless other individuals. These programs in essence strip drinking water down to its most elementary form. We set up a person in our residence a handful of several years in the past. A production plant on the edge of city contaminated the nearby drinking water supply and, although we were not impacted, it served as a very much required wake-up get in touch with. In days, we had a Reverse Osmosis h2o therapy process put in. We additional the UV light product a month later, when we learned some much more about it. Thoroughly clean drinking water is important for overall health and survival. Contaminated h2o can kill you. Do you genuinely have a pick in the issue? Feel sensible. Method forward.

What Is A Reverse Osmosis Water Cooler And How Does It Benefit You?

Did you hear about the reverse osmosis water cooler and want to know exactly what it is? Then you need to find out this information and you need to learn what the many benefits are for your family.

Let's start with what this type of water cooler is. Basically, it is a top of the line water purification system that provides you with clean and healthy water to drink. This cooler use a process called osmosis to get the water clean.

Osmosis is the filtration of water that passes through a semi-permeable membrane that has holes that are small, which prevent contaminants that are large from getting through into the water.

Osmosis works through a chemical process, which means that the water will flow from high to low concentrations. The membrane is used to let the water flow in only one direction, while stopping contaminants that are dangerous for you on the other side.

The water will then be stored in the dispenser to provide you with cool, clean water to drink whenever you need it. Reverse osmosis is basically one of the best ways to ensure the water you put into your body is healthy.

For many people, that is a big benefit that allows them to feel good about choosing this type of cooler to place in their home. Other ways that you will find benefits for these water coolers include:

1. Saves you money - You will save quite a bit of money when you don't have to buy bottles of water every week. Over time this money will add up and you will be able to use it for other things that are needed.

2. Saves your health - This is a benefit that is worth using these water coolers for anyone. Knowing that you are putting only clean, healthy water into your body will leave you feeling good that you are keeping your body healthy.

3. Doesn't take up a lot of space - When you get these water coolers, you can ensure that you always have clean water to drink without having to take up a lot of space in your home. This is a benefit for many because they are already limited on the space they do have in their house.

Just be sure you check out how much space it will take, so you can be sure you have somewhere to put it before you purchase one. Once you have in in your home this will prevent you from having trouble locating a place to put it.

Now that you know exactly what a reverse osmosis water cooler is and how it can benefit you, it is time to decide if this is the right one to add to your home. Take your time and make your decision carefully, but don't take too much time deciding because your body needs safe, clean water to drink daily.

Reverse Osmosis Water Filters

The water that comes out of your faucet is perfect. If you don't use a filter your body is the filter. Which of these two sentences are more true? Both are partially true.

In many places, tap water does not taste good. In other places, tap water has tiny amounts of substances you would not want to drink - and over a lifetime might have an affect on you.

There are many kinds of potential problems in tap water. Even if your city provides good water, it has to travel a long way through old pipes on the way to your house.

I use a whole-house ten micron sediment filter to filter all water going into my house. I change the filters every five months, and they are filthy and red-colored, because of the rust and dirt in the water. When you use a whole-house filter, shower heads and faucet screens don't clog. Whole-house filters are separate from drinking water filters.

All reverse osmosis water systems require both sediment and carbon pre-filters. All filters need to be changed. Plan on changing sediment and carbon filters every six months or sooner, and reverse osmosis membranes every 2-3 years.

It's best to buy a dissolved solids meter, and test your water every month to make sure the system is working right. Pure water will measure zero parts per million of dissolved solids. Tap water usually measures at least 210 parts per million.

Don't get a liquid chemical test set, get a $25-$50 portable battery-operated tester with a LCD readout. These cheap meters only show the total dissolved solids in water - they can't tell you what is in your water.

Water filter systems and replacement filters are available on Ebay and Amazon, and many other places - even retail stores.

The hardest parts of installing water filters are connecting to the supply side of the water into your house, connecting to a drain line for the waste water, and installing a clean water faucet onto your sink. The rest of a water filter installation is easy.

You may need a plumber, or to buy a system where they will install it for you. The best systems have clear plastic casings, so you can see how dirty the filters get. The best systems also use standard-sized replacement filters, so you don't have to buy tiny, expensive, and proprietary filters.

Reverse osmosis water filters require both a sediment and a carbon filter in front of them, to screen out the dirt and most of the junk, before the water enters the reverse osmosis filter.

A sediment filter blocks particles larger than five or ten microns. That's an improvement over tap water, but it does not help the taste, or filter out tiny or dissolved nasty stuff in the water. The next step is a carbon block filter.

Almost all carbon block filters are activated. Activation is a process where high pressure steam is passed through coal to purify it so that it becomes almost pure carbon. Carbon is the fourth most common element in the universe, and is needed for life. Carbon makes an excellent filter, especially when extruded into a solid block.

Activated carbon block filters strain water to trap much more particles than a sediment filter can. The carbon in activated carbon filters have a positive charge that attracts chemicals and impurities. As the water passes through the positively-charged carbon, the negatively-charged contaminants are attracted and bound to the carbon.

Activated carbon block filters strain out sediment, dirt, bacteria, algae, chlorine, some pesticides, asbestos, and much more. They filter sub-micron size particles, making quality water that tastes good.

The water passing through activated carbon blocks still has some particles, chlorine, nitrates, fluoride, and other dissolved junk. The next step for the best quality water is a reverse osmosis filter.

Reverse osmosis filters force water through 0.0001 micron-wide holes, through semi-permeable membranes. Long sheets of membranes are sandwiched together and rolled up around a hollow central tube in a spiral.

The reverse osmosis filter removes 99% of the remaining junk in the water. It takes almost everything out, even the calcium and magnesium in the water. Most often a small carbon filter is used after the reverse osmosis filter, to improve the taste and catch a bit more of that 1% of junk the reverse osmosis filter lets go though.

Even after sediment, carbon block, and reverse osmosis filters, water is still not perfect. Chloramines and metal ions, while reduced, may still be in the water. For this reason, some systems include a final deionizing (DI) filter.

DI filters are usually cartridges filled with plastic-like resin crystals that grab the remaining ions in the water. After the DI filter, the water is very pure.

Reverse osmosis water filters generate waste water, and they produce only a few drops of clean water per minute. For this reason, most reverse osmosis systems have a storage tank to accumulate water. All reverse osmosis systems have a drain line for waste water, that is "wasted". The waste water can be used for plants, dumped down the drain, etc.

Ultra-pure water can grow algae very easily. When you take chlorine and other nasty stuff out of water, tiny microbes and sunlight can combine to make a perfect environment to grow harmless algae.

The quality of water filtered this way is cleaner than even distilled water. Some people think pure water tastes flat. Some people add a tiny amount of sea salt to pure water. For me, no salt is needed, pure water tastes like water should.

The Internet has wild stories about how very pure water is dangerous. Hogwash. If you inject pure water, it may hurt you. Drinking pure water does not hurt anyone unless they are fasting.

The instant that pure water hits your mouth it's no longer pure. Nothing is better for making coffee, cooking, and ice cubes, than using pure water.

My observations over 20 years show that pets, plants, and people really like it. When growing sprouts - with pure water, I found they grew twice as fast as with tap water.

The truth is that ultra-pure water is missing minerals. If you get calcium and magnesium in your diet, you are more than ok. Ultra pure water has no lead, copper, barium, or other garbage.

For me the trade-off is clear. What I want from water is water. As long as you get calcium and other minerals from food or supplements you should be fine. Also, too much copper is not good for you, so why get it in your water?
