Tapping Our Water Supplies

H2o. Two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen, are all that make up the most important substance to all living things on earth.

Purified water normally comes from municipal sources - in other words - the tap. Municipal water is usually treated before it is bottled. What makes up 70-80% of our planet? Water.Today, because of a much increased awareness of water contaminants, more often people are drinking bottled water, or filtering water for consumption. Bottled water can be categorised into three sources:After you decide the kind of filtration system you want to use, go back to your water purity test. If your test returns with chlorine, chloroform, pesticides or organic chemicals, you should consider a NSF-certified carbon filter. If you need a carbon filter, consider installing a sediment filter ahead of the carbon one. The sediment filter will catch any solids that could potentially clog the sediment filter. Carbon filters are not effective against lead or other heavy metals, fluoride and some microbial contaminants.Filtering and PurificationDo you know the best water to use? The best water to use is the same water you use in your iron. The purest water in the world is distilled water. Its as pure as rainwater should be if our atmosphere wasnt polluted.Bacterial and parasiteAnother way of removing unwanted contaminants in water is by filtration. Many people in third world countries dont have access to a clean water supply. We in developed countries have currently almost unlimited access to clean water. My suggestion to you is to use it!Boiling - Water heated to its boiling point for one minute kills micro organisms that normally live in water at room temperature. So, when you drink more water it has the double combination of feeding your body and clearing you of all the waste products that were built up in your system.Nitrate Nitrogen - Nitrate nitrogen is commonly used lawn and agricultural fertilizers. It is also a chemical formed when decomposing waste materials, such as manure or sewage.Ask the local Health Department for the name of a reputable local water testing facility. Professionals will cost a little more, but will be able to give you a lot of information. You can spend a little less by visiting a plumbing supply store and purchasing an at-home water quality test. This will be less expensive than a professional, but also less accurate. When you drink, you want to avoid tap water. Tap water is more like a dazzling mix of chemicals. It contains fluoride, chlorine, and many others. The amount of chemicals in water will fill up books - its more like a chemical soup. The evidence that fluoride is poisonous is so overwhelming that its being pushed to be banned in many countries by action groups.Your brain needs water, and plenty of it. Without water, your brain will operate worn out, tired and sluggish. Water is the ultimate gift to give yourself to think with clarity. In addition, water acts as a kind of healthy lubricant moistening tissues and joints.Spring water - Derived from an underground aquifer from which water flows naturally to the earth's surface. Spring water must be collected only at the spring or through a borehole tapping the underground formation feeding the spring. If some external force is used to collect the water through a borehole, the water must have the same composition and quality as the water that naturally flows to the surface.By means of evaporation, precipitation and run-off, water is constantly changing from one state to another, in what is know as the hydrologic cycle. Run-off is the flow of water after rain which recharges ground water or aquifers. In many countries water is becoming scarcer as human population in those places increases, and its availability is a major social and economic concern.Bottled WaterOrganic minerals can be broken down by the body, while inorganic cannot. One is derived from natural plant life; one is derived from rock carving/filings/small pieces of grit. Which one makes more sense to use? Its better to get your plant minerals through the food you eat rather than the inorganic form in water. Bottled water is often taken, tested and found to have bacteria and very often isnt rated much better than tap water.Distilling : - Involves the boiling of water producing water vapour, leaving behind contaminants. The water vapour then rises to a cooled surface where it condenses back into a liquid to be collected. Although this method does not completely purify, it produces 99% pure water.Consider purchasing a system with a cutoff meter or a performance indication device. This will let you know when it is time to change the filter. There are two main kinds of filtration systems available faucet mounted and in-line systems. A faucet mounted filter has a low installation cost, but will require frequent changes. The in-line system is more expensive, but more comprehensive than the faucet mounted option and requires fewer filter changes. Before you purchase anything, be sure to carefully read the product claims. These will give you a good indication about what the system is designed to remove and what it will not remove.Reverse osmosis : Pressure is applied to contaminated water forcing it through a semi-permeable membrane. Reverse osmosis is said to be the most thorough method of large-scale water purification.Next, run tap water into a clear glass and hold it up to the light. Is the water clear or discolored? Do you see any sediment floating in the water? Be aware, air bubbles can form while water is coming out of a faucet or spigot. If this is the case, the water will look cloudy, but clear up within a minute or two. Air bubbles and related cloudiness are no reason for concern. After a close visual inspection, smell the water. You can expect a faint chlorine smell, much like that at a pool, but if you smell anything else especially a rotten egg smell you need to have the water tested. Also, take a quick walk around the house and look at the sink and bathtub drain, as well as fixtures and porcelain items. Make note of any red, green, blue or brown staining. Most of the nasty contaminants in our water simply dont have a taste. Some people feel its a case of out of sight out of mind. This may work for things people think, yet when it comes to your body, the life of your children, the health of those you care about and the line between getting cancer and surviving its far short of acceptable.Fluoride Added to water to reduce tooth decay but controversy surrounds exists over its benefits and dangers. In low quantities fluoride is use commonly in health applications but levels found in water should be monitored and known. As can be seen, there arises many questions to the authenticity of bottled water label advertising. If you drink bottled water, always read the small print to see where it came from or what it "claims" to be.

Maybe before studying water on Mars, we should take a closer look at what is happening to our own - right here on earth.
